Spouse Visa Requirements Explained

Overview

A spouse visa (also known as a partner visa) allows you to join your British or settled partner in the UK. The requirements are detailed and evidence-intensive, but with careful preparation, many couples successfully navigate the process.

Key Requirements

Relationship Requirement

You must be legally married, in a civil partnership, or have been living together in a relationship akin to marriage for at least 2 years. The relationship must be genuine and subsisting.

Your sponsor (the person in the UK) must demonstrate a minimum income of:

  • £18,600 per year with no children
  • £22,400 with one child
  • Additional £2,400 for each additional child

Alternatively, you can rely on savings of £62,500+ or a combination of income and savings.

English Language

You must demonstrate English language ability at A1 level (for entry) or A2 level (for extensions). This can be through:

  • A Secure English Language Test (SELT)
  • A degree taught in English (with NARIC certificate)
